The Story Behind

Ponduru Khadi Cotton: A Timeless Legacy of Craft and Rural livelihoods.

Nestled in the quiet village of Ponduru, about 20 km from Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, Ponduru Khadi stands as one of India's finest handspun and handwoven cotton fabrics.

Skilled local artisans at Ponduru, spin and weave exquisite khadi from rare & locally sourced cotton using Charkha techniques . The yarns can be of 10 Kal to 18 Kal counts, which makes the fabric feel like butter against the skin.

In the 1920s, Mahatma Gandhi encountered Ponduru khadi during his yatras.

In December 2025, Ponduru Khadi received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, officially protecting its authenticity, origin, and traditional techniques. This recognition honors the generations of artisans, many of them women, who have preserved this heritage through economic challenges, ensuring it remains a living emblem of sustainable, slow fashion.

Today, Ponduru Khadi continues to grace sarees, stoles, dresses, and more, offering not just comfort and elegance but a quiet connection to India's handloom legacy. In an era of mass production, it reminds us that true luxury lies in patience, skill, and the human touch.
